How to turn your passion into a sustainable career

Markell Holland • January 27, 2023

As a professional in the field of marketing, I frequently collaborate with musicians who are skilled and enthusiastic about their work but, lack the business knowledge that is needed to turn their enthusiasm into a financially stable career. If they want to be successful in their music careers, one of the most important things I teach my clients is that they need to approach their musical endeavors like they were running a company.

Organization

Putting your musical career on the same level as a company requires you to be well-organized and productive. This includes maintaining an accurate record of your financial situation, establishing objectives and formulating a strategy to realize those objectives and make them tangible. It also requires being familiar with your industry and staying up to date with the most recent developments in the fashion, technology and industry worlds.

When you're in charge of a company, you can't always go with your gut instincts; instead, you need to be able to make strategic judgments that are based upon data and facts. This includes gathering and examining data pertaining to your target demographic while also monitoring the performance of your rivals and your own standing in the industry. This can assist you in making informed decisions regarding a variety of topics such as where to tour, which songs to release and which platforms to utilize in order to promote your music.

Construct your squad

Both a successful music career and business may be built by a single individual working in isolation, despite the fact that the opposite is a more challenging endeavor. You are going to require the assistance of a group of individuals to complete responsibilities such as arranging performances, promoting your music and managing your funds. To be able to build a team, you need to be able to delegate tasks to others and have faith in their ability to perform essential obligations to the best of their abilities.

Finances

When you treat your music career like a company, one of the most crucial things that this entails is creating and accomplishing financial goals for yourself and your band. This requires you to have an accurate grasp of your income and expenses and create a budget that will assist you in achieving and meeting your financial goals. Second, you must have an honest assessment of what you are able to spend money on and make the best financial choices that will assist you in advancing your career.

After determining what your monetary objectives are, the next step is to establish a strategy for how you want to accomplish them. This plan should contain tactics for expanding your fan base, promoting your music and creating revenue streams such as selling products, receiving royalties for streaming or charging fees for live performances.

When you treat your music career like a business, one of the most crucial components is advertising. This requires you to have a solid grasp of your intended audience and the techniques that are used to communicate with them. It also involves establishing a roaring presence online and making an effective use of social media and other online distribution channels to promote your music.

Dependability

Be dependable requires you to be punctual and receptive in order to meet all of the commitments and requirements of your supporters, team and business associates. Additionally, it entails conducting all of one's commercial interactions in an honest, open, and equitable manner.

In conclusion, if you want to be successful in your music career you need to approach it like a business. This requires you to be organized, efficient and strategic. It entails gathering and evaluating data, putting together a team, establishing and meeting monetary targets and devising a strategy to attain those targets. In addition to this, it entails selling and promoting your music, acting professionally and dependably, and conducting all of your commercial operations in an honest, open, and equitable manner. You will be able to transform your interest in music into a career that is both sustainable and profitable if you approach your musical endeavors in the same manner as a company.
